Site as Lab 是一個遊牧平台,強調生態本身即是具備化學與聲學結構的實驗室,從固態的室內暗房出走,將環境場景(Site)視為物質顯影的感光介面。透過觸發環境物質代謝與地景數據共振,生產低位元的音像。

Site as Lab 為感官研究室(Soft:Doc Lab)長期研究命題的延伸。過去透過「織溫計劃」、「過程電影」、「跨文化電影」與「數據織碼」等計畫,探問數位音像技術如何在跨文化脈絡中與生態作用,並嘗試進入感知生態(Perceptual Ecology)與音像攝錄行為的實踐操作。在 Soft:Doc 的研究歷程中,發現影像與聲音不僅是紀錄的媒介,更是生物、數據與環境協作下的「過渡區間」。

2026 年,Soft:Doc Lab 過渡為 Site as Lab(場景實驗室),將這一系列對「過程」與「生態思考」的關注,轉化為遊牧式的場所實踐,將研究範疇從室內的跨媒介裝置,轉向地景自身的物質代謝。在這裡,場景(Site)不再是被觀察的客體,而是具備化學與聲學結構的「實驗室」本體

Site as Lab is a nomadic platform designed to reset the rules. It asserts that the natural ecosystem is, in itself, a laboratory equipped with inherent chemical and acoustic structures. Departing from the static confines of the indoor darkroom, we redefine the environmental Site as a light-sensitive interface for material manifestation. By triggering the resonance between environmental metabolism and landscape data, we produce low-bit, decarbonized audiovisuals.

Site as Lab serves as an extension of the long-term research inquiries established by Soft:Doc Lab. Through previous projects such as the Temperature Weaving Project, Process Cinema, Transcultural Cinema, and Data Weaving, we have interrogated how digital audiovisual technologies interact with ecology within transcultural contexts, attempting to operationalize the practices of perceptual ecology and the act of recording. Throughout the research trajectory of Soft:Doc, we discovered that image and sound are not merely media for documentation, but rather “ecotones“—transitional zones shaped by the collaboration of biological entities, data, and the environment.

In 2026, Soft:Doc Lab transitioned into Site as Lab. This evolution translates our focus on “process” and “ecological thought” into nomadic, site-specific practices. We are shifting our research scope from indoor cross-media installations toward the material metabolism of the landscape itself. Here, the Site is no longer a passive object of observation, but the ontological “Laboratory”—a core entity of chemical and acoustic structures.

「場景即實驗室」的核心在於重置影像與聲音生產規則,以採集環境中的「現場能量」為實驗參數。創作者更像是地景能量的調度員,透過「遊牧式」的場景介入,讓實驗室隨座標移動。

The core of "Site as Lab" lies in resetting the rules of image and sound production, using the "live energy" harvested from the environment as experimental parameters. In this context, the creator functions more as a dispatcher of landscape energy, employing "nomadic" interventions that allow the laboratory to move along with its coordinates.

場景即暗房

將整片場域視為感光介面。影像的生成不再是光學器材對風景的「掠奪」或「描繪」,而是風景透過物質代謝進行的「自我顯影」,場景不再是被拍攝的對象,它就是顯影液本身,是感光乳劑本身。這種轉譯過程消除了一切中介,讓地景的物質性直接刻印在紙基之上,成為一段可觸摸的、正在代謝的影像路徑。

The generation of an image is no longer an act of "predation" or "depiction" of a landscape by optical equipment; rather, it is the "self-manifestation" of the scenery through its own material metabolism. The site is no longer the subject being filmed—it is the developer itself, the very light-sensitive emulsion. This translation process eliminates all mediation, allowing the materiality of the landscape to be etched directly onto the paper base, creating a tangible, metabolic path of imagery.

地景從不靜默,它是一個不斷複寫、層疊的巨型檔案庫。SiteAsLab 提出的「場景即檔案」論述,旨在建立一套跨感官的解碼系統,將隱形的地景數據轉化為可感知的記憶痕跡。將「創作」行為操作成一種生態檔案的「讀取」。

Landscape is never silent; it is a colossal, palimpsestic archive of continuous overwriting and layering. The "Site as Archive" discourse proposed by SiteAsLab aims to establish a cross-sensory decoding system, transforming invisible landscape data into perceptible traces of memory. The act of "creation" is thus recalibrated into the "reading" of an ecological archive.
